FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER
I am a professional photographer with over twenty years of experience
since establishing my photography business in 1986. During this time I
have been privileged to have my photographs published in books, magazines,
catalogues and calendars. I also exhibit and sell my work at juried art
shows and exhibitions in the Mid-Atlantic area. I am a self-taught
photographer, having taken art classes in college, followed by photography
classes and seminars in various places, such as the International Center
for Photography in New York. I inherited my father's love for Nikon
cameras and now I photograph exclusively with a Nikon F100 single lens
reflex camera using Velvia slide film or the Nikon D300 digital camera.

MY PHOTOGRAPHY - EXPRESSING MY LIFE’S DESIRES
An analysis of the subject matter of my photography will reveal certain
themes, particularly that of architectural details and exteriors of homes
and villages. Like many other artists, my creative work is a process of
self-expression. My photographs express the desires of my heart: what I
want in my life and what I value most. I find that photography is a way to
learn about life. My home is in a small, rural village in Pennsylvania
that has an active community life much like the old villages in Europe. I
value the richness and simplicity of the ordinary - both in art and in
life.
What makes my photography so fresh and beautiful? It’s because I am
passionate about photography and I take great pride in capturing vivid
colors, textures, shapes, and patterns. Most of my photography is from the
European country sides, particularly in lavender and sunflower fields and
ancient villages of Provence, the region in the south of France. In 2008 I
spent a glorious month in France and photographed in Provence and in the
mid-Pyrenees region. In November 2008 I stayed in Umbria, Italy and came
home with many beautiful and interesting photographs of the charming
street scenes in the small Italian hill towns. I'm also excited about my
new 2009 images of Paris and Mount Gretna which are now on my website and
are in my art shows.
IT’S ALL ABOUT COLOR
I am of the “Colorist” genre of art…..color is a magnet for me and is what
first attracts my attention and causes me to stop and consider the
photographic possibilities of a scene. I am absolutely in love with color
and I spend a lot of time observing and enjoying the array of colors in
buildings, street scenes, landscapes, and European outdoor markets. I also
like to create colorful still lifes with flowers, antique dishes and
bottles.
To create my images I use either film or digital Nikon cameras with a
variety of Nikon lenses. The photographic image is printed on Fuji Crystal
Archive paper, using a digital and wet chemistry process.
I have been trained to take a considerable amount of time to carefully
compose and adjust the exposure in camera. Since I am experienced fine art
photographer, most of my photographs do not need to be cropped; however
there are times when I make typical digital darkroom adjustments in
saturation and contrast.

Nancy Ungar, an art critic in the Washington, DC area, reviewed my
exhibition titled “Weathered Beauty: Glimpses of Italy and France.” at the
Kentland’s Mansion, In Gaithersburg, MD. In a review titled: “Gray‘s
Weathered Beauty is Timeless Vision”, Ungar wrote: “Photographer Madelaine
Gray sees past the razzle-dazzle of tourist sites and sentiment. She seeks
out the intimacy and simplicity that have made the hills of Tuscany and
the villages of Provence home for generations of people for hundreds of
years. Gray’s view uniquely reflect the rhythms and colors of these
continuously inhabited buildings: the buildings that Gray examines
unashamedly display their history in nicks, cracks and layers of paint.” |
